A shell of steel,
open and woven.
Corten steel in an open weave, 300 × 450 centimetres. On the Via Artis at Kronplatz — and a sister work in the middle of the village.

Free beside the path,
between rock and weather.
In the catalogue the work is called “Muschel auf dem Kronplatz” — the shell on Kronplatz. It stands free beside the path, without a plinth, without a barrier. Rusting Corten steel against rock and forest, and between the steel, golden surfaces that throw the light back. Through the weave you see the sky and the mountain panorama in fragments.

Woven steel,
gold in the rust.
Hundreds of individually cut pieces of steel form the shell. The golden surfaces sit between them at irregular intervals: in sunshine they light up, in rain they disappear into the rust-brown. The surface goes on working — in ten years the sculpture will look different from the way it does today.
The same motif,
in the middle of the village.
A sister work stands on the paved square between the houses of Selva di Val Gardena. Without the mountain behind it the form reads differently: smaller in scale, closer to the passer-by. Two bronze figures hang on the wall of the house beside it.

Where is Roland Perathoner’s “Muschel auf dem Kronplatz”?
On the Via Artis at Kronplatz, standing free beside the walking trail. A sister work stands in the centre of Selva di Val Gardena (Wolkenstein), on the paved square between the houses.
What is the shell made of?
Hundreds of individually cut plates of Corten steel, with golden surfaces set irregularly between them. Corten steel forms a protective layer of rust, and the surface goes on changing over the years. The work measures 300 × 450 cm.
How does the shell stand beside the path?
Free beside the walking trail on the Via Artis, without a plinth and without a barrier. The catalogue gives it as 300 × 450 centimetres of Corten steel: a pierced shell form, open at the foot. Through the steel weave you see the sky and the mountain panorama in fragments.
A work for a square, a courtyard, a garden?
Works for public space grow out of a conversation with the place — scale, material and position are decided together.
